Azza Al Qubaisi is an artist renowned for exploring and experimenting with metal and natural materials. A jewelry artist, sculptor, and product designer, Azza is often referred to as the UAE’s first Emirati jewelry designer. All her works reveal her prolific creativity, with jewelry and sculptures made from gold, silver, wood, rubber tires, palm trees, and Oudh incense.
Dedicated to a sustainable future, Azza uses simple materials that are an essential component of Emirati families during the pre-oil era, such as the palm branches and weaved Sadu in the methods she developed during the past decade integrating them in a contemporary way. The natural landscape and cultural references coalesce in her pieces, from the shapes, patterns and textures of the desert to the revival of traditional ancient techniques.
“The works reflect my journey as an artist to understand who I am as an Emirati, it highlights all the materials that I have used in my journey as an artist and revolves around materials that were part of the fabric of life in the past.... “ says Azza Al Qubaisi.
Azza holds an MA in Cultural and Creative Industries and a BA in Jewellery Design, Silversmithing, and Allied Crafts. With extensive experience under her belt, Azza has exhibited her world globally with her most renowned works being; 'Three Generations (Sotheby’s London, 2013), UAE National Day exhibition (EXPO 2015 Milan), and ‘Portrait of Nation’ (Berlin, 2017). Her work has been published in several books, including ‘500 Earrings: New Directions in Contemporary Jewellery’ (Lark Crafts, 2007).
